THE SURVIVOR: AN ANATOMY OF LIFE IN THE DEATH CAMPS (1976)

May 26, 2013

AND THE SALVAGING OF INDIVIDUAL AGENCY

By holding on to your humanity-to your soul-and this easily can fly in the face of the logic of reality-it is itself a logic of imposition over reality-and therefore a source of personal power.

And in a certain sense it is just one more example of logic as control-as a strategy of psychological control, and therefore, of comfort exercised by the individual;

And as a defense against annihilation of your individuality-of your spirit-it might seem only secondary in regards to this function: logic as practicality and pragmatism, but above all, logic as will as power as self-affirmation-all, finally, as  comfort as a mechanism of psychological control.

INFERENCES

Logic, patrimony to all human beings-even of those said to have “lost their minds” and the mentally deficient-is, finally, the most powerful underlying force of human will, projection by the individual of action, and the ultimate “food” of psychological vital comfort; it is the foundation of religion, science, the law, language-of human culture itself-and most especially of the individual in his or her peace and afflictions: it is the ultimate cause, in the end, of both.

But it is understood by the regime of techno-military finance of consumer society exclusively as a vulnerability-as an opening as inroad into the psyche of the citizen as consumer-and it is exploited within consumer society exclusively as such.

THE ILLUSION OF APPEALING TO A HIGHER AUTHORITY:

Implies a life vision of the child; for the adult (child) it is hope that becomes a life mechanism itself-an instrument-a prop-as vital context in which to live.

What is, then, life itself from this standpoint?

Nothing as the passing of time as seen from the vantage point of the individual-a bare and essential flatness that must be dressed up and hidden away as hype-just as anthropological culture has always done.

INFERENCES

Human will as life-more than man’s biological nature itself-his cognizance and will to be more than what he just simply is.

And he is:

Nothing except needs and frustration and his limited physical-physiological-capacity to contemplate just this as he is unfailingly dragged through the minutes, days and seasons.

And man is above all cognizance-and because of this he inhabits a vital context of essential, underlying-all enveloping- nihilism.

But the good news is that you are not alone!

And so powerful is this circumstance that it is, ultimately and behind all the questions, double talk and faux strife, the true hope as motor of people and the human condition since the very second it became conscious of itself, after agriculture.

I am talking about human community.

And I mean the person in front of you, or right next to you-what you behold when you look deep into his or her eyes:
