In Key Largo (1948) and Casablanca (1942) there is the darkness of moral definition as absolute-as clarity;

But in both films-and in The Maltese Falcon (1941), Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), The Big Sleep (1946), as well as Desperate Hours (1955)- there is the smirk as disbelief in regards to that very righteousness-as for the self and in whom he beholds:
